    Ministry of Lay Reader:

The ministry of Lay Reader is one of proclaiming the living Word of God.  The Lay Reader is invited to enter a relationship with a Word [Christ] that is creative, powerful and effective.  He or she then imparts the living Word to the community each time scripture is read.  The Lay Reader is the storytellers of our faith.  Each time we hear the Word proclaimed we learn more about our history, about God’s plan for us.  We learn who we are and in this we establish our identity.  The Lay Reader's responsibility is to impart this knowledge in a manner that inspires the hearer to both listen and absorb.

Lay Readers at the St. Uriel's proclaim the Word of God with clarity and passion.  This is so because they pray with the Scriptures, have an opportunity to reflect on them prior to proclaiming them in the liturgy, and have come to love the Word of God.  Our Lay Readers are called to study the Scriptures they read and make them a part of their daily lives, not only in the preparation for Mass, but also as they try to integrate them into their daily living.

Qualifications for Lay Reader is a love of the Word of God, a pleasant speaking voice and reasonable comfort in speaking before a crowd. Each Lay Reader is expected to prayerfully study and practice the assigned reading throughout the weeks before serving.
